Spraying walls and ceilings in the city: how we handle each type of home
In an occupied home we mask everything that should not be painted: windows, frames, floors and sockets. The spraying itself uses a Graco airless system, where the paint is atomised under high pressure without compressed air. That gives an even coat without roller marks and is much faster than rolling.
For spray painting ceilings the same applies as for walls, with extra attention to skylights, spotlights and ceiling roses. Ceilings in older Haarlem homes are often yellowed or blotchy from years of cigarette smoke, cooking steam or an earlier leak. We treat stains first so they do not show through the new coat.
In homes with a staircase and a tall hallway we ask in advance how the space is built up. A high stairwell can often be reached with an access platform or a rolling tower, but we discuss that at the visit. In apartments it helps to let us know beforehand that the lift will be used briefly for materials.
