Biobased latex paint is wall paint made partly from raw materials from renewable sources instead of only from fossil ones. Meesterspuiters writes on its own website that the latex they work with is made biobased. What that can mean in figures, we show using the data sheet of Sigma Air Pure Supermatt. That is an example product: in our quote we state which latex we use. Our "from" prices are €7.95, €9.95 and €11.95 per m2.
Biobased latex and sustainable wall paint: what do we mean
Biobased means that part of the ingredients comes from plants or other renewable sources. It does not say that a paint is entirely natural, and it says nothing about how long the paint lasts. Sustainable wall paint is also a broad term. A manufacturer can be talking about the raw materials, the production, the packaging or health in the home.
That is why we prefer to look at concrete properties on a technical sheet. Below you can read what Meesterspuiters writes itself, and what an example product states.
What Meesterspuiters says about biobased latex
On meesterspuiters.nl it says (in Dutch): "The high-quality latex that Meesterspuiters works with is a product that is made biobased, and the environment is burdened minimally during manufacture." (as of 6 October 2026).
Latex-Spuiter.nl is the painting and latex spraying company of Sander, with Meesterspuiters as its parent company. Which product exactly is in your quote, we state with the quote itself. A general quotation is not a product specification.
What biobased wall paint can mean: the Sigma data sheet
The data sheet for Sigma Air Pure Supermatt describes the paint as a high-quality, water-based, super-matt interior wall paint based on biobased raw materials. We use this sheet as an example to show which properties you may come across with biobased wall paint.
Important: this is an example product. We are not saying every job is done with this paint. In the quote we state which latex we use.
| Property | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 45% biobased (ASTM D6866) | According to the sheet, 45% of the paint is biobased, measured by this method. The rest is therefore not biobased. | Sigma data sheet |
| Solvent-free | The sheet calls the paint solvent-free and water-based. That is about the composition of the product. | Sigma data sheet |
| Formaldehyde reduction | The sheet says the paint removes formaldehyde from the air: up to 70% reduction over 7 years, tested by Eurofins. | Sigma data sheet |
| Dubokeur | A Dutch sustainable building label that the sheet mentions for the paint. It is not a certificate of our company. | Sigma data sheet |
| Cradle to Cradle Silver | A certification of the product according to the sheet, not of Latex-Spuiter.nl. | Sigma data sheet |
| Recycled bucket | According to the sheet, the bucket and lid are 100% recycled. | Sigma data sheet |
Solvent-free latex paint: what the sheet says
Solvent-free means the paint contains no solvents as an additive. The sheet of the example product calls the paint water-based and solvent-free. That says something about the composition and fits latex on a water base.
What it does not say: that the paint is odourless or that you do not need to ventilate. Ventilating during and after the work remains sensible. We have not been able to find a Dutch source that explains ventilation and volatile substances around paint, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
The 2023 consumer survey by Milieu Centraal shows that 93% of respondents answered that water-based paint is less harmful to your health than turpentine-based paint. That is a statement from a survey and not proof of the composition of a specific paint.
Formaldehyde-reducing wall paint: what does a Eurofins test mean
The sheet of the example product states a formaldehyde reduction of up to 70% over 7 years and says that Eurofins tested this. That is a claim by the manufacturer with a named test body. We have not assessed the underlying test report ourselves.
What you can do with it yourself: ask for the data sheet of the product we use when you get a quote, and see whether the claim is there. If you have complaints or questions about air quality in your home, a professional in that field is a better person to talk to than a painter.
Choosing biobased latex paint: scrub class, drying time and use
Sustainability is one property, not the only one. You also choose on scrub class (washability under NEN-EN 13300), coverage and the room. According to the sheet, the example product has scrub class 2 under NEN-EN 13300, determined after a month of drying. Our packages run from scrub class 3 (Basic) and 2 (Medium) to 1 (High). How those classes work, you can read under scrub class of latex.
The sheet further states dry after about 1 hour and overpaintable after 4 hours at 23 degrees and 50% humidity, with a coverage of 7.5 to 10 m2 per litre. For airless spraying the sheet gives a nozzle size of 0.018 to 0.021 inch and a spray pressure of 16.5 MPa. You can find more about the technique under latex spraying.
Cost of spraying biobased latex
Our prices are "from" prices per m2 and apply to light colours and one colour per quote. Which package suits your wishes, we discuss at the visit.
| Package | Latex | "From" price per m2 |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | standard latex, scrub class 3 | €7.95 |
| Medium | medium latex, scrub class 2 | €9.95 |
| High | high-end latex, scrub class 1 | €11.95 |
A worked example, not a quote: 100 m2 of walls and ceilings costs from €795 with Basic, from €995 with Medium and from €1,195 with High. You can read more about prices under latex spraying cost per m2.
Advantages and disadvantages of sustainable latex paint
Possible advantages of biobased latex paint are a share of renewable raw materials, a water-based composition and a lower burden on the environment during manufacture, as Meesterspuiters puts it. Possible disadvantages are that another product sometimes has a different price, coverage or drying time.
We do not make it sound better than it is. A good choice looks at your room, your budget and the sheet of the product. An overview of spraying in general is under pros and cons of latex spraying.

Frequently asked questions
What is biobased latex?
Biobased latex is wall paint of which part of the raw materials comes from renewable sources. The data sheet of the example product states 45% biobased according to ASTM D6866. So that is not 100%.
Do you use Sigma Air Pure Supermatt?
That is an example product that we use to explain properties. In the quote we state which latex we use, so that you can look at the data sheet of that paint.
Is sustainable wall paint the same as environmentally friendly latex?
Not automatically. Sustainable and environmentally friendly are broad terms. Rather look at concrete properties on the sheet, such as the biobased percentage, the composition and the packaging, and ask for the source.
Is solvent-free latex odourless?
The sheet does not say that. According to the sheet the example product is water-based and solvent-free, but ventilating remains sensible during and after spraying. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
What does formaldehyde-reducing wall paint mean?
According to the sheet of the example product, the paint removes formaldehyde from the air, up to 70% reduction over 7 years, tested by Eurofins. It is a claim by the manufacturer. We have not assessed the test report ourselves.
Do you have Cradle to Cradle or Dubokeur?
No, those belong to the product, not to our company. The sheet of the example product mentions Dubokeur and Cradle to Cradle Silver. We do not show certificates of our own.
Is biobased latex more expensive than ordinary latex?
That differs per product. Our "from" prices are €7.95, €9.95 and €11.95 per m2 depending on the package. The quote states which latex goes with it and what the exact price is.
Which scrub class does biobased latex have?
That depends on the product. According to the sheet the example product has scrub class 2. Our packages are scrub class 3, 2 and 1. More explanation is under scrub class of latex.
Can biobased latex also be sprayed?
The example sheet gives specific airless details: nozzle size 0.018 to 0.021 inch, spray pressure 16.5 MPa and 0 to 10% thinning with tap water. That applies to that product. Other latex can need other settings.
How do I request a quote with biobased latex?
Call +31 6 38048347 (06-38048347), 7 days a week from 07:30 to 19:00, or use the contact form. The visit is free. Mention that you would like biobased latex, and we will discuss the options.
