Which is better, rolling or spraying latex? For large surfaces, ceilings and an even finish, spraying is usually the smartest choice; for a small wall or a limited budget, rolling is often enough. Spraying is faster, but needs more preparation.

Below I set the differences between rolling and spraying side by side, with sources. I also answer the question of whether latex spraying is cheaper. Our price for spraying starts at €7.95 per m2; the exact price is in your quote, which you can ask for via request a quote.

Difference between rolling and spraying latex

The difference between rolling and spraying lies in the way the paint gets onto the wall. With rolling you apply the paint with a roller and work strip by strip. With spraying, the paint is atomised by an airless machine and laid over the surface in one movement.

The column on rolling is my own trade knowledge; the facts on spraying come from the sources named.

Which is better: rolling or spraying latex?

That depends on your job. Choose spraying if you:

  • want several rooms or a whole floor done;
  • want a ceiling to be even, without joins;
  • want the home handed over in one go.

Choose rolling if you:

  • only have one wall or a small surface;
  • want to do the job yourself;
  • do not want or cannot arrange the masking work.

What spraying involves exactly, you can read under latex spraying. We always come back to it honestly at the site visit: if rolling suits better, we say so. You then pay nothing for a method you do not need, and you can be sure you get advice that fits your home. Also take into account how much time you have yourself, because rolling mainly costs you your own hours.

Is latex spraying cheaper than rolling?

Is latex spraying cheaper? Not always. Spraying saves time, but preparation also takes time. Homedeal names less paint loss and speed as advantages of spraying, without figures. That is why we cannot quote a fixed percentage.

What we can say: our price starts at €7.95 per m2 and includes masking, hand sanding, filling and two coats. On latex spraying cost per m2 you can see all the prices, and under affordable latex spraying you can read what to look out for if price matters to you.

Price guides compared with our price for spray work

Price guides give an indication of what spray work costs, as of 6 October 2026. Homedeal quotes €10 to €16 per m2 for latex spraying, labour and VAT included. Werkspot quotes on average €6 to €15 per m2 for interior painting, and an example job of 170 m2 of new build with airless latex for €800 to €1,000.

Converted, that is roughly €4.71 to €5.88 per m2 for that one job. Such an example is not a quote for your home, because the surface, colour and number of rooms differ. So use price guides as a direction and let the final choice depend on a quote that states exactly what is done, how many coats there will be and whether the VAT (btw) amount is counted.

Overspray, masking and protection when spraying

The most important practical difference is the mist. Wagner says you should wear respiratory protection with overspray, and that low-pressure systems exist that give less mist. That is why we mask and protect both ourselves and your home. That is part of a good spray job and so is no reason to give up on spraying, as long as you have it done by a professional who knows how the machine works.

With rolling this hardly plays a part. But even with rolling, good masking is needed for a sharp edge. For us, the extra preparation is outweighed by the time saved on larger jobs.

For you as a resident, the difference shows mainly in the days themselves. With spraying the room is briefly in our hands, and with rolling you are often stuck for longer with masked edges and a half-painted room. That counts if you keep living in the house during the job.

Rolling or spraying latex on walls and ceilings

For walls the difference is mainly visible in the finish and the speed; read wall spraying for details. For ceilings the gain is often bigger, because you do not have to work above your head: see having your ceiling sprayed.

Do you only have doors or a staircase? That is a different job, namely lacquer work, and it needs a different paint and a different finish from latex on walls. Its own prices apply, namely from €110 for an interior door, from €650 for a closed staircase and from €700 for an open staircase.

Drying time and coats: spraying or rolling

The drying time depends on the paint, not on the method. For Sigma Air Pure Supermatt it says dry after about 1 hour and overpaintable after 4 hours (Sigma). So with rolling and spraying you wait just as long for the second coat.

We always spray two coats. With rolling that is also usual for most latex; check the sheet for your paint.

An extra advantage of a fixed way of working is that you know in advance what you get: masking, sanding, filling and two coats, at a price per m2. With rolling on your own, you work out your own hours, tools and paint; according to Homedeal, a painter charges €35 to €40 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, rolling or spraying latex?

For large surfaces and ceilings, spraying is often better: faster and more even. For a small wall, rolling is usually enough. The choice depends on your job and your budget.

Is latex spraying cheaper than rolling?

Not always. Spraying is faster, but needs preparation such as masking. Compare quotes on the m2 price and on what is included. With us, spraying starts at €7.95 per m2.

What is the difference between rolling and spraying?

With rolling you apply the paint with a roller; with spraying an airless machine atomises the paint. Spraying is faster and more even, but needs more masking work and protection against mist.

How much faster is spraying than rolling?

In our experience, latex spraying is up to 5 times faster than traditional rolling: one coat on a room of 12 to 20 m2 takes 30 to 60 minutes. Wagner says up to four times faster, even for beginners. With spraying, masking does take the most time, so in an empty home or a new build the gain is greatest.

Does spraying cause less paint loss than rolling?

Homedeal names less paint loss as an advantage of spraying, but gives no figures. Wagner mentions low-pressure systems that give less mist. We cannot give a fixed percentage.

Do I have to mask more when spraying?

Yes. Spraying creates mist, so everything that must not get paint is masked. With us, masking of windows and frames is included in the price.

Can I spray latex myself instead of rolling?

Yes, with a suitable machine, but it takes practice with pressure, tip and distance. For one wall, rolling is simpler. Read our page on DIY latex spraying.

Which method gives the nicest result?

Spraying gives an even coat without roller marks, especially on ceilings. Rolling can also work well, with a lot of care and a good roller. The surface determines much of the end result.

What does latex spraying cost per m2?

From €7.95 per m2 (Basic), from €9.95 (Medium) or from €11.95 (High), for light colours and one colour per quote. The quote shows the VAT (btw) amount.

How do I request a quote?

Via the form on the contact page or by phone or WhatsApp on +31 6 38048347. We come round, look at the rooms and make a tailor-made quote.
