Notably, 93 percent of homes are older than ten years and new build from the past ten years makes up only 7 percent. So you almost always deal with existing walls: old paintwork, a few holes from pictures, sometimes wallpaper that has been painted over. Do the sums and you see the difference between the two types of home. Suppose an apartment has 120 m2 of walls and ceilings: in the Basic package from €7.95 per m2 that comes to €954. In a family house our work usually starts with the hall and the stairs. A stairwell with an open void needs scaffolding or a ladder that stands safely, so we always look at that during the advice visit. The advantage of airless spraying is that we finish a high ceiling in one sweep, without visible roller edges.

In an apartment it is about protecting neighbours and shared spaces. We carefully mask the rooms that are not sprayed, keep the lift clean and carry our things upstairs without dirtying the stairwell. For a VvE (owners' association) or landlord we put the working days in writing.

• Empty or when moving: faster work, because we have less to cover.

One more point for older homes: dusty or greasy surfaces. In kitchens and around the stairwell there is often a thin film of grease or dust that stops paint from adhering. We clean such spots before applying the first coat, so that the paint stays neatly in place.
