Choosing a good latex sprayer starts with five questions: is the surface ready for paint (sausklaar in Dutch, meaning smooth and ready), who does the masking and clearing up, which latex paint and scrub class goes on, what exactly is in the quote and how much experience does the sprayer have with airless equipment. Ask those questions of every provider, including us. Spray work with us starts from €7.95 per m2 and the visit is free.

Below we go through the checklist step by step, with what is included as standard with us and what you should look out for yourself. Want to know the cost first? See the price of latex spraying.

1. The surface: ready for paint, smooth and primed where needed

The success of spray work stands or falls with the surface. Latex spraying gives a thin, even coat; it does not hide irregularities. Existing texture stays visible after spraying.

What does sausklaar mean?

Sausklaar means the wall is smooth and flat enough to apply latex directly, like tight plaster work. Ask the latex sprayer whether he touches up small damage himself or whether you have to do that (or have it done) beforehand. With us, hand sanding and small repairs are included in the price; larger repairs are shown separately in the quote.

Priming in new builds and fresh plaster

New plaster is very absorbent. That is why new walls first need a primer coat, so that the latex adheres evenly and does not dry patchy. Fresh plaster must also be properly dry first: a wall with dark patches still contains moisture. Ask whether priming is included in the price; with us it is listed separately and clearly in the quote. You can read more about new homes under latex spraying in a new build.

2. Masking and protecting against spray mist

Latex spraying creates spray mist: very small paint particles that float through the room. Everything that should not be sprayed, such as windows, doors, frames, floors and sockets, must therefore be carefully masked and covered.

Who does the masking and clearing up?

Ask explicitly whether the sprayer does the masking and the clearing up afterwards entirely himself. That saves you a lot of work and frustration. With us, masking, covering furniture and clearing up at handover are included as standard.

Why masking takes the most time

In our practice the spraying itself is fast: one coat on a room of 12 to 20 m2 takes 30 to 60 minutes. Careful masking determines the planning. In an empty home or new build it therefore goes fastest. How the spraying itself works, you can read under how latex spraying works.

3. Latex paint and scrub class: not every wall paint is the same

The quality of the latex determines how long your walls stay looking good. Two things to ask about: the brand and the scrub class.

Scrub class 1, 2 or 3

The scrub class under NEN-EN 13300 indicates how well you can wipe the wall. Class 1 is the most resistant to scrubbing and knocks and suits a kitchen, hall, stairwell or living room. For a bedroom class 3 is often enough. With us each package has a fixed class: Basic class 3, Medium class 2 and High class 1. An explanation per class is under scrub class 1, 2 or 3.

Professional brands

We work with professional brands such as Sigma, Sikkens and Caparol. We only thin within what the technical sheet allows; for Sigma Air Pure Supermatt that is 0 to 10 percent water for airless spraying. Heavily thinned latex covers less and shows colour differences sooner.

4. The quote: per m2, inclusive or exclusive?

Avoid surprises afterwards by reading the quote critically. Latex sprayers usually work with a price per square metre. Make sure the total surface area has been measured properly, including ceilings.

Question for every quoteAt Latex-Spuiter.nl
Is the price inclusive of VAT (btw)? The VAT amount is in the quote; for homes older than 2 years 9% applies to painting work
Is the paint included, and which scrub class?Yes, class 3, 2 or 1 per package
Masking, filling, sanding, small repairs?Yes, included
Priming new plaster?Separate and clear in the quote
How many coats?Always two coats of latex
Are the m2 measured, ceilings too?Yes, at the free visit
When do I pay?Only after completion (iDEAL, debit card or invoice)

A low "from" price without these points can still turn out more expensive later. Where price differences come from, you can read under affordable latex spraying.

5. Experience with airless spray equipment

An experienced latex sprayer knows the right coat thickness, nozzle size and spray pressure. That way you do not get stripes, streaks or runs. Graco advises starting at the lowest pressure and increasing it gradually until the coat is even.

References and photos

Ask about earlier projects and photos of finished work. Our own photos are under photos of our spray work. We work with more than 10 years of experience in latex and lacquer spray work.

Agreements at handover

Ask how the sprayer deals with points that are not right after handover, such as a spot that does not cover. With us we walk through the work together and you only pay afterwards, so that any points are resolved first.

Common mistakes in latex spraying and how to avoid them

  • Spraying on a surface that is not ready for paint: irregularities stay visible. Sand and repair first.
  • No primer on new plaster: the latex soaks in and dries patchy.
  • Too little masking: spray mist on frames, skirting boards or windows.
  • Thinning too much: less coverage and colour differences; follow the technical sheet.
  • Wrong pressure or nozzle size: stripes and runs.
  • One coat instead of two: less coverage and less wear resistance.

Want to know which other disadvantages spraying has? Then read about the disadvantages of latex spraying. If you are torn between methods, see the difference between rolling and spraying.

How to prepare your home for the spray work

A good latex sprayer does most of the work, but a few steps help the planning:

  1. Remove loose items, paintings and small furniture.
  2. Put large furniture in the middle if possible; we cover it.
  3. Make sure fresh plaster is completely dry.
  4. Tell us which colour and which scrub class you want per room.
  5. Arrange access and, for an apartment, agreements with the VvE (owners' association) about the stairwell.

Do you want your ceilings crisp? Then also read about having your ceiling sprayed.

Tell us about your project and get a clear quote

To get a good picture of your latex spray work we need two things: roughly how many square metres of walls and ceilings it is, and the state of the surface (new plaster, wallpaper or old paintwork). Send it via the form or WhatsApp to +31 6 38048347 (06-38048347), or arrange a free visit straight away. You only pay after completion.

Frequently asked questions

What should you look out for with a latex sprayer?

Look out for five things: whether the surface is made ready for paint, who does the masking and clearing up, which brand of latex and which scrub class is used, what is in the quote (VAT, materials, primer, coats) and how much experience the sprayer has with airless equipment.

What does sausklaar mean?

A sausklaar wall is smooth and flat enough to apply latex directly, like tight plaster work. Latex spraying does not hide irregularities, so holes and hairline cracks are first repaired and sanded.

Does new plaster need a primer first?

Yes. New plaster is very absorbent, so latex without a primer can dry patchy. The plaster must also be completely dry first. With us priming is listed separately in the quote.

Is masking included in latex spraying?

That differs per provider, so always ask. With us masking, covering furniture, filling inside corners, sanding and clearing up are included in the price per m2.

Which scrub class of latex suits a living room?

For a living room, hall or kitchen, preferably choose class 1 or 2, because you wipe those more often. According to NEN-EN 13300, class 1 is the most resistant to scrubbing. In a bedroom class 3 is often enough.

Is the price per m2 inclusive of VAT?

Always ask. With us the VAT amount is in the quote. According to the Dutch Tax Administration, the reduced rate of 9% applies to painting work on homes older than 2 years.

Are ceilings also counted in the m2?

Yes, if they are sprayed. Make sure the sprayer measures the total surface area, including ceilings. We measure everything at the free visit.

How do you avoid stripes and runs in latex spraying?

Through the right coat thickness, nozzle size and spray pressure, a surface that is ready for paint and two coats. That takes experience with airless equipment.

What do I ask a latex sprayer about earlier projects?

Ask for photos of finished work, the type of homes he works in and how points are resolved after handover. With us you only pay after completion.

What details do you need for a quote?

Roughly how many m2 of walls and ceilings it is, the state of the surface (new plaster, wallpaper or old paintwork), the desired colour and scrub class, and your town. After the free visit you receive a quote.
